The collections picked up and reached Rs. 4.15 crore on Saturday, but fell down on Sunday to Rs. 3.7 crore, possibly because of the India-England nail-biter in Bangalore.<br /><br />The film’s first weekend figure stands at approx Rs. 11 crore nett.<br /><br />On the other hand, 7 Khoon Maaf is gasping its last breath. The film’s collections fell by 80 percent after the first week collection of Rs. 15 crore nett.

Though the response was more heartening in north India than elsewhere, the film is expected to perform well over the weekend and the coming weeks because it doesn’t any stiff competition at box office.<br /><a name="more"></a><br />Vishal Bhardwaj’s much hyped 7 Khoon Maaf has turned out to be a colossal disappointment. It rounded off its first week with a collection of Rs. 15 crore nett.<br /><br />Likewise, Patiala House completed its two-week run at box office with a total business of Rs. 30.50 crore so far. It’s being labelled a flop.<br /><br />The coming month would see no big releases from Bollywood due to the ongoing cricket world cup and also because of the examinations in schools and colleges. It’s that time of the year when the box office goes into doldrums.

It’s a mismatch as odd as it gets, because though he falls head-over-heels for this foul-mouthed chatterbox, she is dead against the arranged match and instead wants to hook up with a Lucknow gunda named Raja (Jimmy Shergill).<br /><a name="more"></a><br />Manu, the poor soul, nurses the heartbreak and even helps Tanu and her goon beau elope. The plot thickens when Tanu and Manu cross paths against the backdrop of a big fat Punjabi wedding. Love for Manu seems to be taking root in Tanu’s heart, but then Raja rears his head. Drama, peppered with clichéd emotional conflicts and standoffs between the two suitors follow, and, given the film’s title, we know whom Tanu will eventually choose.<br /><br />The predictability of the plot is well compensated by the melee of oddball characters that director Anand L Rai crowds the story with. There’s is an utterly likeable sidekick (Deepak Dobriyal) and a Sikh friend (Eijaz Khan) of Manu adding fun to the proceedings. There’s Raja’s crony (Ravi Kishen) and Tanu’s best friend (Swara Bhaskar) chipping in from the margins. And full credit to director Rai for the brisk pace at which the first half unspools. Alas, the same can’t be said of the second half, when the story stagnates and we see more of Jimmy Shergill than would have liked to. It’s a clear case of a story losing its steam after a triumphant start. Even the build-up to the climax is somewhat overblown.<br /><br />Warts and all, Tanu Weds Manu still remains a watchable fare thanks to the wonderfully realistic milieu of India’s crowded, dusty small towns and their middle-class families with their colourful characters that remain pivotal to the story until the very end. On top of it, music by Krsna breezes with vim and vigour. The humour mostly remains light-hearted, sometimes evoking laughs, sometimes falling flat.<br /><br />Kangana performs well as a small town rebel without a pause. Her body language is decidedly bratty, her dialogue delivery, at times bordering on lisp, creditably raw and edgy to suit her character. Madhavan shines as a submissive, love-struck NRI with no firangi airs. The actor’s naturally charming persona adds tons to his character’s credibility.<br /><br />On the sidelines, Deepak Dobriyal impresses the most while Ravi Kishan is reduced to a caricature. Jimmy Shergill is all frowns but Swara Bhaskar does leave a mark as Kangana’s friend who tries to hammer some sense into the reckless Tanu.<br /><br />All in all, Tanu Weds Manu is like the shaadi ka laddoo that you can neither resist nor happily bite into. Make time for this matrimonial comedy if you haven’t yet tired of watching the reruns of Jab We Met.

Tanu Weds Manu starring Kangana Ranaut and Madhavan may not be riding high on buzz, but the promos and the movie’s look has done the trick. As Tanu Weds Manu revolves around a marriage, this song just fits in and is also the most apt number to promote the film.<br /><br />Mohit Chauhan gets to belt out the romantic Yun Hi. This song will leave an impression in your mind because of its melody which is not diluted with the heavy use of instruments. The song has quasi-ghazal feel and can remind you of some of the hit soft numbers of the 80s. As for Mohit, the silvery voiced singer continues to get our rah-rah.<br /><br />Sometimes we just ignore the rich folk culture of music in India; only when a film brings out the folksy tunes that we notice and feel wow. Rangrez, influenced by Rajasthani folk, wins you over with its earthy flavour. It’s a passionate rendition by Krsna, who has got strong vocals.<br /><br />There is another version of the song Hey Rangrez Mere by none other than Wadali Brothers (Puranchand Wadali & Pyarelal Wadali). The song instantly grabs your attention because of the Sufi duo Wadali Brothers and like always they have delivered a power packed song with their brilliant vocals. A treat for the music aficionados!<br /><br />The album adds another folksy gem with Piya crooned by Roop Kumar Rathod. This tender song floors us with Roop’s dramatic mix of amazing voice which gives the song a distinct romantic mood.<br /><br />Now starts the battle between Kanpur and Delhi with Manu Bhaiya. The commonplace lyrics are almost graphic; you can go from Karol Bagh to Qutub Minar within seconds. The song is addictive because of its easy, rustic feel. If Sunidhi Chauhan gets to sing the entire song, the chorus has got the singers Ujjaini, Rakhi Chand, Vivek Naik, Manjeera and Niladri Debnath. Masses can easily relate to this track and that’s what makes it a winner in the album.<br /><br />Mika makes us forget everything and sing the crackling number Jugni with him. Lyrics of the song in praise of a bold lassie are noteworthy, and make the song a fun to hear. To get into the groove listen to the song. Jugni naughty hai!<br /><br />Tanu Weds Manu is not like the other Bollywood albums we get to hear now and then. The treatment of the film is different though it’s a masala comedy with cheerful faces and funny dialogues. The songs do full justice to the marriage and masti theme of the movie. There is nothing superfluous about the songs, they lack mush and don’t sound stiflingly romantic. But the diverse range of tracks has one similarity; all are earthy in feel and thus are very endearing.

However, we felt that ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ was a more suitable title, according to the demands of the script. So we decided to go with ‘Tanu Weds Manu’,” said Rai.<br /><br />The film will release Feb 25.
